Interns can expect to work broadly within the following areas. (NOTE: We are happy to work with interns who are looking for academic credit.)
Artistic Programming & Casting
Responsible to both the Artistic and Associate Artistic Directors, intern coordinates performances, rehearsals, and relations with actors, directors, and playwrights. Aids in the audition process, rehearsals, and scheduling, takes notes for playwrights after our weekly staged readings, and helps the reading directors set up/take down. Helps coordinate and assist Network and Resident Playwright events, and acts as a liaison to playwrights in the area.
Development & Fundraising
Works with the Managing Director to explore and secure funding opportunities for the theatre. Intern gains hands-on experience in grant research, writing and preparation, donor recognition, events organization, and presentation of the theatre to the outside world.
Theatre & Project Management
Works with the Managing Director and Office Management Associate in monitoring aging receivables, processing individual and corporate donations, managing our merchant services processing account and general project management.
Audience Services & Box Office Management
Works with the Office Management Associate in processing comp and Jeff Committee ticket requests and ticket payments. Coordinates with the Box Office Associate in preparing Pre-Sale and Will Call forms for each individual performance. Is the touch point for reservation changes and general audience services functions.
Marketing & Public Relations
Works with the Managing Director to create and cultivate public relations and marketing materials including, but not limited to posters and fliers, brochures, and press releases. Assists in design and implementation of all materials dealing with the public face of the company. Engages in research to better understand and target desired market segments to improve position in the market.
Must be personable and comfortable on the phone. Design experience a plus but not necessary.
Technical Direction & Production Management
Works with the Managing Director to spearhead the the proper care and maintenance of our 77-seat theater facility, take stock/inventory of various lighting & sound equipment, oversee the upkeep & repair of our rehearsal spaces, coordinate various major installation & facility upkeep projects, take inventory of & supervise the construction of the Chicago Dramatist Scene Shop. The hours for this internship are project-based, and hence both varying and flexible from week to week.
